What Makes Mastiffs Unique

Mastiffs are very calm and relaxed dogs and at times they don't seem to be keen on exercising. So, make sure that you give them lots of exercise and on a regular basis.

Also keep in mind that Mastiffs need more socialization than other pet dogs. So, make sure to be home all the time and give them attention since all the Mastiff training in the world is worthless if you're never home and they get anxious.

And lastly, you must be patient when training your Mastiff since they can be a bit stubborn and also because of their size its evident that training them will not be a simple task.

Mastiff Training Basics

Mastiff training is ideal to start young. But remember to make sure that your mastiff puppy stays with his mother for at least 8 weeks of age. This is because Mastiffs have a carefully balanced personality and it's essential that he gets the proper socialization that he needs.

As he matures, you need to keep that socialization. This means that someone in the family or household should be home with the mastiff puppy every single day until the dog turns 3 months of age. And also remember that they have to be socialized with other dogs whenever possible.

Training your mastiff to be a guard dog is not recommended. Simply because their personality is not easily controlled if they start learning to be guard dogs. Their size should be enough to intimidate any possible invaders and they will be protective if needed.

Mastiff Training for Obedience

As mentioned earlier training your Mastiff should start at a young age and this also comes with obedience training. You can begin training them at around 10-14 weeks when the puppy has already been housebroken. Also keep in mind never to get violent or be aggressive towards a Mastiff because as they get older the threat of such a large dog as it ages.

Because almost all mastiffs are peaceful and relaxed dogs they likely won't be doing a lot of tricks. And the most important thing you can teach them is to sit and stay as well as to walk on a leash. It is also recommended to train them not to go after things because it can be difficult to keep a dog with its size in control.

When training your Mastiff remember to have a lot of dedication on your part. And always remember to keep your Mastiff socialized with a huge family, neighbors or a nearby dog park.
