Ways To Stop Puppy Chewing

Chewing is a very natural and expected behavior in any puppy and if you're trying to stop that behavior, you should first understand that it is a part of who they are.

Puppies are going to chew on things, either because they are bored to death or simply because they are teething. So instead of trying to stop your pup from doing this, you should redirect their focus and keep them active. You can do this by making your dog do enough things to do that they wouldn't want to chew up your rug, sandals, or couch cushions.

Why You Need To Stop Puppy Chewing

Some people might think that chewing is a natural behavior when a puppy is still young and just allow them to continue. And some do the opposite and punish their pup and this is wrong because it will confuse the pup and this will cause other behavior problems.

The fact is that you have to balance both of these reactions. You should show your pup that chewing on your things is a bad thing, but never use negative reinforcements simply because there are lots of alternatives.

How to Stop Puppy Chewing

Here are a few things you can do when your puppy's chewing at something:

Behavior Adjustment - instead of stopping your dog from chewing on your things, you can teach it to chew on the proper things, like a plaything and you can praise the pup when it starts chewing on it. This will help teach your pup that chewing the plaything is right and the other thing is not.

Keep Your Pup Busy - aside from redirecting your dog from the items that you don't want them to chew, you also need to keep them from getting too bored. Puppies will chew anything just to make themselves busy, even if they're not teething. You can avoid this by getting them plenty of exercise and playing when you're home. You can also leave them chew toys when you're not home.

Crate Training - if leaving them a toy to play with while you're not at home isn't enough, you can try crate training them. This will restrict their access to the house.

Aversion Sprays - you can use a spray like Bitter Apple or Cayenne which is harmless and humane. This will help them easily associate the spray with the stuff that they're chewing and stop them from doing so.

Aside from using these strategies to stop your puppy from chewing things, you should always remember not to punish your pup or hit them for any reason. This is will only mislead them and they will likely never discover what they did wrong.

Be Consistent

You also have to be consistent if you want to stop puppy chewing. When you leave the house, be sure that you don't leave garments or stuff toys around for them to chew. Keep in mind, you have to stipulate the rules and make sure that your pup follows them.

Mastiff Training
If you're looking for a big dog then the Mastiff is dog for you. But if you don't properly train your mastiff, they will just be runaway train of muscle and dog slobber at home. This is why you must put Mastiff training on top of your list.
